Patience is a virtue…..Nathan Yu fills the point for UBC

For most of his basketball career on the Point Grey campus, Nathan Yu has come off the bench to give the Thunderbirds a spark as part of the second unit. Entering his fifth and final season in the blue and white, Yu will find himself with a whole new role and responsibility for his team.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend…BC’s Katie Reyes’s makes Canadian Fastpitch Championship debut

Just over a month ago, Softball City welcomed the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship to South Surrey, BC.  What was once known as the “Canada Cup” for many years, the Championship committee worked overtime this year to expand the field of competition to include the Futures (U19) and Selects (U16) as part of the nine day event.  Whereas the tournament originally showcased the top women’s softball players from around the world, including one of the most well known softball stars, Jennie Finch, young hopefuls from throughout Western Canada got the opportunity to see local greats, Danielle Lawrie and Melanie Matthews don the red and white uniform to showcase their talents.  One of those young hopefuls, Katie Reyes from Burnaby, BC has taken up the opportunity and is running the bases with it.

BEHIND THE MASK……….Introducing Miranda Cardinal

As the softball season was “officially” declared open at the start of the month, Miranda Cardinal and the Thunder ’93 team were already well into their schedule.  Taking part in an early pre-season tournament in Las Vegas in February, the Thunder ’93 battled every American opponent to the end and highlighted the trip by capturing a victory against an “A” division team from BC.  While the record sheet from the tournament did not show positive results in the win/loss column, the growth within the team and competitive juices were kick started.  As games progressed Cardinal noticed that every pitch, hit and out made, helped prepare her teammates for the battles they would be sure to come across in their drive for a spot in the provincial tournament.

Baby Steps, Big Dreams

Have you ever wished there was a gym that was always open to train in, or to play pickup in? I’ve always been tired of trying to get a hoop down at a local recreation center, only to be told that there was floor hockey coming in to decimate the gymnasium floor, or a large group of young children to play duck-duck-goose for hours on end, or even something as silly as kite flying. Such a problem is a rarity at Pitt Meadows Secondary School: one can virtually stop at any time at the Pitt Meadows Secondary gym and see the red Ford Ranger and the “COACH G” license plate to know the gym is available. Pitt Meadows Secondary, a school of roughly 1,250, possesses one of the finest programs in the province, built from the ground up by Rich Goulet.

Northern Talent Turning NCAA Heads

In what may go down as one of the most improbable Final Four brackets in NCAA history, this yearʼs version of March Madness has completely lived up to the name.

If your name is Sherman Hamilton, or youʼre living in the Richmond area, then yes, you expected this to happen – why wouldnʼt you? And if youʼre a fan of child-looking coaching staffs and repeat Cinderella performances, then again, you expected this.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN…EBERHARDT AND GRIFFINS CAPTURE AAA TITLE!

2011 BC AAA CHAMPIONSHIP - PALMER vs. VANCOUVER COLLEGE

For thirty years, fans and players who shared a basketball environment with Paul Eberhardt often wondered what it would take to quiet the often colorful and flamboyant coach, and surprisingly enough, the one time in which many expected and welcomed his vocal expressions were presented with…..silence.

To understand where the pent up silence came from, one must first go back into time. Many know the rich history both Paul Eberhardt and Bill Disbrow have in the BC high school circles. Growing up in Richmond during the 80′s and 90′s, the battle on the hardcourt predominantly featured the Steveston Packers and the Richmond Colts, with the McNair Marlins playing the role of the ugly stepsister. Towards the end of the century, the Marlins replaced the Packers, but remained second fiddle to Bill Disbrow’s led Colts. Although they managed to make a handful of appearances at the BC Championships, Eberhardt’s club never reached the elite status that blanketed the Richmond Colts.

Vancouver trio lead NAIT Ooks to ACAC Gold, next step CCAA repeat!

They have each taken a different path to get to where they now are, but as a trio they completed the trip to the ACAC Championship together.  From their high school careers in Vancouver, through various stops in BC and the United States for their post secondary careers (Kong:  one season at Douglas College CCAA Champion,  one season at Gonzaga…Crellin:  one semester at Douglas College, cup of coffee at Grayson County Jr. College Texas…States:  one season at Douglas College) to their current stop at a highly unthought of location at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT OOKS).  Each known for their unlimited potential on the hardwood, their struggles off the court have been highlighted just as much.  However this story is not so much about the paths chosen in the past, but of the journey that they are currently taking towards the CCAA Championship.

Step One…..Redemption (UBC vs. SASKATCHEWAN CANWEST CHAMPIONSHIP)

One year ago, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, led by All-Canadian guard Showron Glover, arrived at UBC’s War Memorial Gymnasium as the underdog squad amongst the Calgary Dinos, Simon Fraser Clan and the host Thunderbirds.  Two nights later, they left Point Grey with the CanWest Championship after upsetting the T-Birds and Dinos.  On Saturday evening the Huskies once again found themselves in the championship game, this time squaring off against the top seeded Birds.
